CMC explores nature based solutions to tackle urban waterlogging woes

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation is exploring nature based solutions for flood mitigation and groundwater recharge across waterlogging prone areas within its limits. Spanning 637.19 square kilometres, the civic body identified nearly 56 locations experiencing inundation for up to two hours during recent monsoon rains, disrupting traffic and resident movement.

Rapid urbanisation and increased paved surfaces have reduced natural absorption, exacerbating local waterlogging. In response, the municipal corporation is examining measures to capture, store stormwater, and facilitate groundwater recharge.

A presentation was held with the CMC Commissioner alongside Beemamraja and Shakthivel, focusing on decentralized stormwater management. The session highlighted Smart Urban Decentralized Storm Water Solutions implemented by Tamil Nadu Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, which utilize modular eco block and sponge based techniques. These systems capture heavy rainfall runoff to improve groundwater levels while reducing urban inundation.

Following the demonstration, the CMC Commissioner instructed engineering officials to evaluate the technical feasibility of adopting similar models across identified vulnerable spots in Cyberabad. The municipal corporation plans to implement these sustainable stormwater measures in a phased manner to control urban flooding and enhance groundwater recharge citywide.
