BJP demands Rs 50,000 per acre compensation for cyclone-hit farmers
Tallada( Khammam): BJP leader Namburi Ramalingeswara Rao has demanded that the state government pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre to farmers who suffered crop losses due to the recent Murusu cyclone rains and declare Tallada mandal a drought-affected area.
A team of BJP leaders led by Ramalingeswara Rao and district Kisan Morcha general secretary Apathi Venkata Rama Rao toured several villages, including Annarugudem, Billupadu, Vengannapeta and Mittapalli, on Wednesday. They inspected damaged agricultural fields and interacted with affected farmers, expressing solidarity with them.
Speaking on the occasion, the BJP leaders said paddy, cotton and chilli crops cultivated across thousands of acres in Tallada mandal had suffered extensive damage due to the cyclone. The crops had been flattened by strong winds and heavy rains, leaving farmers in a desperate situation, they said.
The damage to paddy crops, particularly those nearing harvest, had dealt a severe financial blow to farmers, who were unlikely to recover even their cultivation investments, they added.
The leaders said farmers had already been facing difficulties due to the El NiƱo phenomenon and adverse weather conditions during the kharif season.
Many had borrowed money and invested their own resources in cultivation, only to see their crops destroyed by natural calamities.
They alleged that farmers were being deprived of insurance benefits as the state government had not implemented the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a Central government crop insurance scheme intended to provide financial protection against crop losses. The BJP leaders urged the state government to immediately conduct a transparent assessment of crop damage by sending officials to every affected agricultural field. They demanded an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 per acre to all affected farmers and sought the immediate declaration of Tallada mandal as a drought-affected area.
