Delhi Hostel Collapse: Five MCD Officers Suspended After Seven Deaths
After a private hostel building in Delhi collapsed killing seven people the other day, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated its first major disciplinary action. The Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has suspended five officials, including the South Zone Deputy Commissioner.
An order issued by the MCD’s Vigilance Department stated that, “The Deputy Commissioner, South Zone, is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect as per DMC Services (Control & Appeal) Regulations, 1959. He will be paid subsistence allowance as admissible under the rules.”
The suspended officials comprise of MCD Deputy Commissioner, Executive Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer.
The MCD Vigilance Department had made an order to suspend the deputy commissioner of the south zone with immediate effect.
The action was being taken under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Services (Control & Appeal) Regulations, 1959, said the order. It also said the officer would be awarded a subsistence allowance as per the relevant regulations.
Four more engineering officials, in addition to the Deputy Commissioner, have been put on leave related to the collapse of the building.
The action follows reports of the building's poor condition and possible violations, while the building has come under scrutiny for operating as a private hostel.
The suspensions come on the heels of the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's order to take stringent action against officials for lapses associated with this incident.
The punishment was given a day after the collapse of a multi-storey building in Delhi's private hostel, killing seven and injuring many others.
The rescue team left no stone unturned in their efforts to look for victims in the wreckage and to retrieve them.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation, with some possible structural and regulatory flaws considered.
These are the latest suspensions and additional accountability measures may be implemented as the investigation continues.
