Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Targets DMK, Invokes Anna, MGR, NTR And Jayalalithaa In Assembly Speech

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay launched a sharp attack on the DMK during his response to the debate on the Police Department’s demands in the Assembly on Monday, accusing the previous government of discontinuing welfare programmes, delaying action in cases involving ruling-party functionaries and using the police for political purposes.

Vijay also invoked the political legacies of former leaders CN Annadurai, M G Ramachandran, N T Rama Rao and Jayalalithaa while asserting that his government would focus on public welfare, safety and a corruption-free administration.

Vijay Says His Government Will Prioritise Public Safety

Vijay told the Assembly that his government's utmost aim was to make people live in fearlessness. Concerns and suggestions raised by legislators during the Budget session will be looked into and taken care of based on the priority, he said.

The Chief Minister also said criticism on public safety issues, if any, would be taken seriously and added that his government would not take a decision as to who is to be blamed for an incident before looking at the facts.

CM Accuses DMK Of Dropping Welfare Schemes

Vijay alleged that several welfare initiatives introduced during the earlier AIADMK government were discontinued after the DMK came to power.

He specifically mentioned Amma Mini Clinics, the Thaalikku Thangam scheme, Amma two-wheelers and schemes providing goats and cows as examples.

He further alleged that laptops were not distributed to students for four years during the DMK's tenure and claimed that Jayalalithaa University was shut down.

According to Vijay, voters took note of these decisions and expressed their verdict against the DMK in the election.

‘After Anna, MGR And NTR, It Is Vijay’

In a political assertion during his speech, Vijay said, “After Anna, MGR and NTR, it is Vijay.”

He expressed confidence that his government would remain committed to people's welfare and said he believed that God and nature would support its efforts.

The statement placed Vijay within a political lineage associated with leaders who built strong electoral movements in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Vijay Responds To Criticism Over Assembly Speeches

The Chief Minister also addressed criticism from the Opposition over his participation in Assembly debates.

Vijay argued that a Chief Minister was not required to personally answer every question raised by legislators. He pointed out that ministers responding on behalf of the Chief Minister was an established practice followed by successive governments.

Law And Order Becomes Major Focus

A significant part of Vijay’s address focused on policing and alleged political interference during the previous DMK administration.

He alleged that FIRs were delayed in cases involving ruling-party functionaries and claimed political pressure had resulted in certain individuals receiving protection.

Vijay referred to the alleged harassment of a female police officer, during a Virugambakkam public meeting held in 2022, convened by the DMK. Later, he alleged that she was pressured to drop her complaint and a case was actually registered in 2023.

He also mentioned that a worker at a cashew processing yard, allegedly connected to the DMK MP Ramesh, had been killed and was initially presented as a 'suicide' incident.

Vijay said there were several other cases in which he alleged that police action had been delayed when ruling-party functionaries were involved.

‘Law Will Take Its Course’: Vijay On Women’s Safety

Vijay contrasted those allegations with what he described as his government's approach of taking legal action irrespective of whether an accused belonged to the ruling party or the Opposition.

He also criticised abusive and allegedly degrading political rhetoric targeting women.

Referring to Jayalalithaa, Vijay had mentioned the humiliation that Jayalalithaa had suffered in the Assembly, and added that such a situation should not be repeated.

He said freedom of speech must not be abused to make statements that are defamatory, indecent or double-minded about women or political opponents.

Vijay said those political statements were being “kept under observation” by women and called upon the politicians to keep in mind that the women they were targeting in the public discourse were also members of a family.

He attributed woman's support to his political activities and cautioned that law will be its own course if women are given to defamatory or indecent statements.
