Rajamahendravaram: Congress CWC member Gidugu Rudra Raju condemned the detention of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, describing it as an attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition.

In a statement here, Rudra Raju said the arrests of the senior Congress leaders were unacceptable in a democratic country and alleged that the government was using its authority to prevent opposition leaders from raising issues concerning the people.

He said Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had been consistently raising public issues and standing with people on matters affecting their rights and livelihoods. Detaining them instead of addressing the issues being raised by the opposition was not in the spirit of democracy, he said.

Rudra Raju demanded the immediate release of the detained leaders and urged the government to respect democratic values and the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

He said the Congress would continue to raise issues concerning the people through democratic and constitutional means.
