Deep depression crosses coast near Kalingapatnam

Vijayawada: The severe depression over Bay of Bengal hit the coast near Kalingapatnam at around 11 pm on Wednesday. It also took two hours for the deep depression to cross the coast after landfall.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain said on Wednesday.

Jain said warning messages were being issued regularly to field-level officials and the public in coordination with RTGS Aware and the State Disaster Management Authority.

He urged people to remain alert for another 48 hours as heavy rainfall is likely even after the system crossed the coast. People were advised not to stand near trees or hoardings as strong winds are expected. Fishermen were warned against venturing into the sea.

With heavy rains lashing North Andhra, there is a possibility of flash floods, and people living in low-lying areas were advised to exercise caution. For emergency relief and rescue operations, five SDRF and four NDRF teams have been kept ready in the affected districts. Three SDRF teams have been deployed in Srikakulam, two each in Alluri and Visakhapatnam, one in Polavaram and one in Anakapalli.

Heavy rain forecast: Jain said heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Manyam, Alluri, Polavaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Kakinada districts on Thursday. Moderate rainfall is likely in Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla and Palnadu districts, while Markapuram, Prakasam and Nellore districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain.
