Vijayawada: The commitment of donors and alumni towards their alma mater has brought significant improvements to the PM SHRI Zilla Parishad High School at Nunna in Vijayawada Rural mandal of NTR district. Development works worth Rs 32 lakh, taken up with their support, were inaugurated by the donors themselves on Wednesday.
The latest works include a compound wall constructed at a cost of Rs 29 lakh on the eastern and northern sides of the school premises and installation of statues of eminent scientists at a cost of Rs 3 lakh. The works were taken up under the aegis of the school alumni association.
Donors Guntaka Nageswara Reddy and Yarkareddy Leela Krishna Reddy, along with former headmaster and Best Teacher Award recipient Vajrala Bhupal Reddy, inaugurated the compound wall and unveiled the statues. Prior to this, they performed special pujas to the Goddess Sri Saraswathi Devi at the Sri Saraswathi Devi Kala Vedika within the school premises.
The compound wall was constructed with the support of alumni, walkers and donors, including former student Yarkareddy Uma, donor Guntaka Nageswara Reddy, and walkers association, with the approval of the Krishna Zilla Parishad authorities. Five rows of fencing were also installed over the wall to prevent unauthorised entry and protect school property.
Statues of former President and scientist APJ Abdul Kalam, irrigation expert Dr KL Rao, Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, Srinivasa Ramanujan and Yellapragada Subbarow were installed to inspire students to pursue science and technology and work towards achieving their goals.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhupal Reddy said development works worth around Rs 1.50 crore had been taken up at the school with the support of donors. He said it was encouraging that donors were coming forward to provide infrastructure in a government school attended mainly by children from poor and middle-class families, enabling them to compete with students of corporate schools.
He said the special initiative of alumni association representative Naredla Satyanarayana Reddy had helped bring several facilities to the school.
Headmaster Surapaneni Ravi Prasad said students were excelling not only in academics but also in sports and other activities. He said the school had recently received the School of Sports Excellence award.
Later, the donors were felicitated by headmaster Ravi Prasad, School Management Committee chairperson Mullangi Sonia and other members. Former Vice President of Nunna Gram Panchayat Kalakoti Brahmananda Reddy, Alumni Eeda Srinivasa Reddy, Bhumula Sambasiva Reddy, Walkers Association representative Kalakoti Veera Reddy, first assistant Gopinath, staff secretaries P Nageswara Rao and Padmavaji and others attended.
