School bus drivers told to ensure students’ safety

Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha has called upon school bus drivers to discharge their duties with utmost responsibility, stressing that the safety of students largely depends on their alertness and commitment.

He was speaking at a training programme organised by the Transport Department for school bus drivers on driving skills, road safety and safe transportation of students at the Lorry Owners Association Hall at Benz Circle here on Wednesday. Deputy Transport Commissioner (DTC) M Purendra advised drivers to treat student safety as a major responsibility rather than merely a job. He cautioned them against overspeeding, negligent driving, using mobile phones while driving, sudden overtaking and traffic violations.

Drivers should check brakes, tyres, steering, lights, mirrors and emergency equipment before operating buses.

They should exercise extra caution while students board or alight from buses and ensure the vehicle comes to a complete halt. RTOs R Praveen and K Venkateswara Rao, UPHC Medical Officer Dr Bhargavi, Station House Fire Officer GV Rama Rao and others attended.
