Warangal: Farmers in Mahabubabad district have been advised to prepare for the possible impact of El Nino, which could result in deficient rainfall. Officials from the Horticulture and Sericulture Department urged farmers to conserve water and electricity and adopt crops requiring less irrigation. The advisory was issued at an awareness programme held at Etigadda Thanda Farmers’ Platform on Tuesday. Department official Jinugu Marianna explained pest control measures and mango orchard management. Farmers were advised to use recommended sprays against honeydew insects and bird’s eye disease. Officials also suggested suitable foliar nutrients and stopping irrigation until mango flowering begins.

For the Yasangi season, farmers were encouraged to choose horticulture and dryland crops instead of paddy. Drip irrigation, mulching and raised beds were recommended to reduce water consumption.

Agriculture and horticulture officers and several farmers attended the programme.
