Chennai: The incident of honour killing has created a flutter in Tamil Naidu state. A mother who was angry with her daughter for having a love affair with a Dalit man has set her on fire. Later, she also tries suicide attempt by setting herself alive. Where both suffered 90 per cent burn injuries. This incident has happened at Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.

According to sources, Uma Maheshwari works as a daily labourer and her husband Kannan is a carpenter who resides at Thirumarugal village. The couple has a 17-year-old daughter Janani.

In this context, Janani falls in love with a Dalit boy who also hails from the same village. The girl belongs to the BC community and decides to get marry him once she becomes major in the next month.

The parents who came to about this have scolded her. With this, mother and daughter entered into a heated argument, where Uma lost her cool and poured kerosene on her daughter and herself and set on fire. Both have sustained severe burns.

On hearing their screamings, the locals came for the rescue, put off the fire and rushed them to Nagapattinam government hospital. Where Janani died on the way, and Uma's condition is said to be critical. Over the incident, the police registered a case on Uma and investigating further.
