The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Thursday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar within 48 hours and warned of nationwide protests if he did not step down.
At a press conference in New Delhi, CJP founder and convenor Abhijeet Dipke, along with co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, announced a series of demands concerning the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The organisation said it would organise a sit-in protest in Delhi and expand the agitation across the country if its demands were not addressed.
The CJP demanded Kumar's resignation, criminal proceedings against him and those it alleged had directed his actions, and a freeze on upcoming elections. It also called for the SIR exercise to be rolled back to the January 2025 electoral-roll position, for SIR-related records to be placed under a Supreme Court-led committee, and for the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners to be repealed.
The demands followed reports by The Indian Express that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over decisions and actions within the poll panel. The ECI has said that differing views, written observations and internal checks are part of its decision-making process and maintained that its decisions over the past year, including those concerning the SIR, were unanimous.
The CJP also raised concerns over the centralisation of electoral-roll processes and alleged that the SIR was being used to influence electoral outcomes. These claims were presented by the organisation and have not been established as facts.
Dipke also alleged that Kumar was acting on the instructions of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This was an allegation made by the CJP and was not established by the report.
The dispute coincides with increased scrutiny of the ECI due to the SIR exercise and apparent discrepancies among the three members of the poll panel. The CJP started campaigns on government school infrastructure after organizing protests over purported irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 exam.
