New Delhi: The Patiala House trial court in Delhi on Friday, refused to issue fresh black warrants or death warrants to the four convicted death-row prisoners in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape case. The Tihar jail authorities sought the issue of fresh "black" warrants against the four death row convicts, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta.

The matter was heard by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana of the Patiala House Court, who also heard the case on January 31 with regard to the hanging which was scheduled to take place on February 1. In the January 31 hearing, the Patiala House Court judge had postponed the hanging indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the Centre approached the Delhi High Court with a plea for the early hanging of convicts separately, if necessary. Dismissing the Centre's plea, the Delhi Court, gave the four death row convicts seven days to exhaust all their legal options.

The additional sessions judge took this High Court judgement into consideration while dismissing the plea of the Tihar Jail authorities. The Delhi High Court's February 5 order clearly gives the convicts a week to exercise their legal remedies.

The Centre has also approached the Supreme Court against the High Court's verdict, in the matter.

The Nirbhaya case has cast its shadow on the Delhi assembly elections scheduled to be held on Saturday in the national capital. Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP have blamed each other for the delay in the hanging of the four convicts.
