Assn poll: Truck owners courted

Assn poll: Truck owners courted
Joda: Campaigning is underway for the Joda Truck Owners’ Association elections on October 12, with two opposing groups competing for votes. Candidates are actively courting truck owners by promising higher truck loading rates and increased mineral transportation costs in the local mining region.
The Joda mining area relies heavily on the trucking industry, which supports over 30,000 residents. While the Truck Owners’ Association is crucial in negotiating mineral transport rates with industrial companies, stagnant freight costs and the rise of pipeline transportation have caused severe financial losses for local truck owners.
A massive gap in transportation costs existed from Joda to destinations like Paradip, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Gopalpur, Raurkela, Sambalpur, and Dhamra. Despite consistent Association protests and proposals for rate increases, mining and industrial firms continue to operate arbitrarily. Furthermore, several large industrial companies have installed slurry pipelines to transport minerals directly from their mines, a shift that threatens to severely impact the local trucking business.
The Truck Owners’ Association faces a critical role in ensuring fair, responsible mineral transportation from mining and industrial companies. Workers have demanded an end to narrow, exclusionary policies to guarantee loading arrangements for all truck owners, turning this logistical challenge into a major election issue.
