Dr Tessy Thomas, director, Advanced Systems Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Geeta Varadan, project director (mission) of Agni V and director of Advanced Data Processing Research Institute, ISRO, have been chosen for the prestigious Dr Y Nayudamma Memorial Award for 2014.

Dr Tessy Thomas, director, Advanced Systems Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Geeta Varadan, project director (mission) of Agni V and director of Advanced Data Processing Research Institute, ISRO, have been chosen for the prestigious Dr Y Nayudamma Memorial Award for 2014.

The award is being conferred on them jointly for their significant contributions in the fields of missile technology and remote sensing. P Vishnu Murthy, founder and managing trustee, Dr Y Nayudamma Memorial Trust, says that this is the first time in the annals of the trust that two eminent women scientists are being concurrently honoured.

The award, instituted in 1986 by Dr Yelavarthy Nayudamma Memorial Trust to commemorate the distinguished leather technologist Nayudamma, is annually given to persons chosen for their outstanding contribution to science and technology. According to Vishnu Murthy, the award will be presented to Dr Tessy Thomas and Geeta Varadan at a special function in Tenali on Sunday, March 1.

The recipients will deliver the 23rd Dr Y Nayudamma Memorial Lectures on themes ‘Make in India - Defence Needs and Initiatives’ and ‘Remote Sensing Technology for National Needs’ respectively. Prof. Shanta Sinha, Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient, will present the award to the women scientists.
