Hyundai is looking forward to spreading its hands towards more diversified offerings in its line up. Reportedly, the company is working on manufacturing and applying the AMT (automatic manual transmission) gearbox in its cars in near future. Moreover, the manufacturing will take place locally at the company’s plant in Tamil Nadu, India which would lead to cost curtailment.

At present, none of the Hyundai cars consist of an AMT gearbox option. The Grand i10 comes with a 4-speed torque converter gearbox which is not preferred by many, courtesy its low fuel efficiency and high pricing. Comparatively, the AMT gearboxes cost much lesser than traditional units and give similar mileage as their manual counterparts.

Maruti Suzuki had started offering the AMT tech in 2014 when it was first introduced in the Celerio. With an intention of having a wide product range, Hyundai is working to implement the AMT technology in its budget vehicles initially. Later, the company might introduce this gearbox in its other offerings as well.
