Guntur: The state government is in favour of extending Guntur channel. Following instructions of the government, the water resources department has taken steps to conduct survey for the extension of the channel.

The government entrusted the responsibility to the Krishna delta chief engineer. As soon as survey is conducted, the government will have clarity on how much land is required for extending the channel. After completion of land acquisition, the government will start work.

The government has a proposal to extend the channel from 47 km to 77 km and for the construction of distributor channels.

At present, tail-end villages in Pedanandipadu and Kakamanu mandals are not getting irrigation water. As a result, the farmers are worrying a lot and mounting pressure on the government to extend channel works.

The farmers protested on the roads for extending the channel. The farmers took up the issue with Minister for Water Resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao.

He directed the officials to prepare DPR. Meanwhile, the official sent a proposal to release Rs 89.50 lakh for conducting survey, investigation, land plan schedules preparation for which the government gave its nod.

If this proposal is translated into action, another 25,000 of ayacut area will be stabilised and some villages will get drinking water.

Sources in the irrigation department informed that the survey and investigation will be completed within three months.

After that, they will submit a detailed project report to the government for taking further action. After that, they will start land acquisition process. Later, they will start channel extension works and lift irrigation works.
