Nellore/Kadapa/Tirupati: The depression in the Bay of Bengal has had severe impact on Nellore district, with heavy rain lashing during the last two days, particularly in the coastal areas, affecting normal life. Low-lying areas were flooded and drains and streams overflowed. Paddy sowings were inundated. Farmers are worried about the damage as banana plantations were under flood water. However, the heavy rain is seen as a boon by farmers in upland areas, as their tobacco, chilly, pulse crops are likely to benefit. A group of fishermen from Tamil Nadu who had gone to the sea three days back got struck at Pathapattapupalem. Local fishermen rescued them, deploying special vessels.

In Nellore flood water entered houses causing severe hardship to residents. The Gandhi Bomma Centre, Ramesh Reddy Nagar, Pogathota, Brundavanam, Vedayapalem, Saibabanagar, Kesavanagar areas were water-logged. Thunderstorm in Kavali damaged ACs, fridges, TV sets in Railway Feeders Road and Vengalrao Nagar.

There was widespread rain in Kadapa district since Saturday.Heavy rain lashed between 7 pm and midnight. Kadapa, Rajampet, Pulivendula, Rayachoti, Mydukur, Railwaykodur, Khazipet, Vempalle and Badvel and other mandals received rainfall, severely affecting normal life. Crops which have already been hit by the recent five-day downpour are likely to be damaged. Groundnut ryots are in distress, as the Met office forecast rain during next two days. Incessant rain lashed Chittoor district, mostly mandals in the eastern part, since Saturday damaging standing crops. Tanks were full in many mandals. In the mandals, including Vijayapuram, SR Puram and Nindra, crops, vegetables and sugarcane were damaged. A control room was opened at the collectorate (phone 08572-240500) in Chittoor. According to official sources, the average rain fall recorded in the district till 8 am on Sunday was 166 mm. Vijayapuram mandal recorded highest rainfall of 124 mm followed by SR Puram 103 mm, Ramachandrapuram.
