Hyderabad: With earlier efforts not yielding many results in preventing child marriages, the AP Women Development and Child Welfare Department (APWDCWD) is now looking at girl child education as a prime solution to deal with the social scourge.
“There is a strong association between the education and marriage at the younger age. In a recent survey by our department, it is found that the girls, who continued with their education, are not becoming the victims of early marriages. As parents, even from those communities where early marriage has been a culture, feel that since the child is engaged in some activity, let’s not disturb her. But, when the child fails or drops out of school, the first thing that comes to thought is to get her married, and be relieved,” said Chiranjeevi Chowdary, Commissioner, APWDCWD.
The AP State, which stands no. 1 in child marriages, has also achieved the dubious distinction of having highest numbers of school dropouts among girls. Despite significant progress in improving girls’ access to education in the last two decades, it is found that seven out of 10 girls drop out of school before they reach class 10. If the net enrolment rate of girls in primary education is 96 per cent, it gradually dips to 60 per cent in secondary education. To deal with the dropout issue, the WDCWD is in talks with authorities of Rajiv Vidya Mission, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyala and are identifying the school dropout girls. The aim is to enroll them in primary education institutions and prepare them to join up the main stream education schools. They are also focusing on improving the toilet and water facilities at these schools, which is considered as one of the main reason for increased drop out of girl students.
The department is also set to identify the dropout school girls and enrolling them in vocational training and skill development institutions to provide job opportunities.
MS Chandra of CARPED, an NGO that extensively works against child marriage in AP says, “Educating girl child will not only fight child marriages, but also fight malnutrition in children, deal with infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR), violence against women, in reducing HIV cases and helps build healthy family.”
