Hyderabad: Both the State Assembly and Legislative Council on Saturday were adjourned for the day without transacting any business as the impasse over the discussion on AP Reorganisation Bill continued.

While the Assembly was adjourned twice before the final adjournment, the Council was adjourned for the day soon after it reassembled at 12.30 pm after the first adjournment.

In both the Houses, the Seemandhra legislators stormed into the well, raised slogans, displayed placards and stalled the proceedings opposing the Bill.

This came in for sharp criticism from the Telangana MLAs belonging to all the parties. While the YSR Congress (YSRC) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLAs protested near the Speaker’s podium holding united Andhra Pradesh placards, Congress MLAs stood at their seats and shouted slogans against the State division.

Interestingly, newly-appointed Minister for Legislative Affairs S Sailajanath also joined the chorus by holding a placard in support of united Andhra Pradesh. This act of the Minister came in for sharp criticism from Telangana MLAs and Ministers.

Later, Sailajanath along with other Seemandhra leaders including Minister for Finance Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, met the Speaker and is learnt to have explained to him why he held the placard.

As the appeals from the chair went unheeded, Speaker N Manohar adjourned the House for half-an-hour at 9.05 am. The situation did not change even when it reassembled at 10.35 am.

Within five minutes it was adjourned again for an hour. When the House resumed at 12.40 pm, Deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka tried to pacify the agitating members, who surrounded the podium and shouted slogans again. While the members were protesting, YSRCP floor leader YS Vijayamma along with party MLAs -- Sobha Nagi Reddy and Srikant Reddy-- submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Speaker demanding that a resolution in favour of united Andhra Pradesh be adopted before initiating the debate on the draft Telangana Bill.
