Hyderabad: The CCS police on Tuesday apprehended a fraudster who cheated the gullible public to the tune of Rs 13 lakh by posing as an IAS officer.

According to police, on January 18 they received a complaint from a priest Narasimha Charyulu, a resident of Jiyaguda, against the accused H Venkata Ramana Rao, who identified himself as an IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre.

Narasimha charyulu revealed that on December 2013 he got a call from the accused who convinced the priest that he met him in a puja programme and became his disciple. As a mark of respect towards him, he assured him of necessary arrangement for special darshan and puja sevas of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala Hills. He attributed all this to his acquaintance with the present Executive Officer of TTD. He assured the priest that he would provide even tickets for special pujas and sevas at TTD and that he wanted to gift a ticket for ‘Abhishekam Vastram Seva’ and also Udayasthamana Seva as he was an IAS officer.

Later, he called him and said that he had some more tickets with him and interested people could deposit some amount in his account with Axis Bank, Dilsukhnagar, to avail the sevas. The priest deposited around Rs 13 Lakh in the account on behalf of his friends and relatives in the hope of providing them with special darshan and sevas at the TTD.

Subsequently the trickster vanished with the money and didn’t send any tickets. The priest, who found himself cheated, lodged a complaint with the police who registered a case and took up the investigation. During investigation the police obtained the details of the bank account holder where the victim had deposited the money and through which they came to know that the accused had opened another account in Axis Bank at Himayatnagar in the name of H Venkata Ramana Rao where he gave his original address.

Subsequently on Monday, the CCPS police apprehended him and on interrogation he confessed to his guilt. The police later seized net cash of Rs 6 lakh, an Alto car and two phones and two debit cards from his possession.
