Hyderabad: A massive fire broke out on Sunday in the godown of the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (APCPDCL) at Eraggada, leaving it completely gutted and causing extensive damage.

According to a fire official, as many as 17,000 electric meters and electric equipment worth crores of rupees were completely gutted. However, no casualties were reported.

The incident which is believed to have happened around 3 pm on Sunday caused huge losses to the Discom. Initial investigations suggested that a short circuit could have sparked the blaze at the godown located at Eraggada GTS Colony.

Thick black smoke billowed from the building as electrical goods stored in the godown caught fire. Two fire tenders and a hydraulic platform from Sanathnagar fire station were pressed into service to extinguish the flames. The fire fighters battled nearly for three hours to control the blaze. However, fire tenders continued to remain at the spot till late evening as inflammable things in the godown continued to catch fire in different parts of the building. Fire tenders also used water from the nearby reservoir to douse the flames.

“We immediately rushed to the spot after receiving the call. The mishap is believed to have caused damage of around Rs 2 crore,” said a fire official.
