Hyderabad: The Congress party on Monday made a quick move to steal the thunder from Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) by announcing that it would make a Dalit as the Chief Minister if it is voted to power.

This announcement has rekindled the hopes of Dalit leaders in the party who claim that this is an indication that the talks between the Congress and TRS hit a major roadblock.

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh who visited Karimnagar on Monday took on the TRS party and said that its K Chandrasekhar Rao had in the last 10 years announced time and again that he would make a Dalit leader the Chief Minister of Telangana State. But once the Telangana State had become a reality, he changed his stance. It appeared that he was now nursing the ambition of becoming the first CM of the new State.

Jairam said that Congress party had always been committed to giving prominence to the Dalits made; it made Damodaram Sanjivaiah the first Dalit CM of the State five decades ago.

To a query if the party would abide by the announcement, Jairam emphasised: “Yes, 200 per cent, the party will abide by it. This is the thinking of Rahul Gandhi also.” He further said that achieving social justice was not playing 20: 20 match. Pointing towards K Raju, the chairman of AICC SC cell, he said Rahul Gandhi discussed ways of implementing social justice plan with Raju and asked him to search for a suitable candidate.

This statement of Jairam, was welcomed by CM aspirants like Union Minister of State Sarve Satyanarayana who immediately threw his hat in the ring, saying, "If the Congress decides to make a Dalit CM, I will surely be in the race." However, other chief ministerial aspirants in the party like K Jana Reddy, D Srinivas, N Uttam Kumar Reddy and D K Aruna did not react to the statement of the union minister.

Congress leaders in Telangana, however, feel that this statement of Jairam has the concurrence of party high command and it would help the party gain more advantage among Dalit voters. Meanwhile,TRS leader T Harish Rao ridiculed the statement of Jairam Ramesh saying that Congress was trying to woo the Dalits as it was scared of losing its identity in the region. He said the Congress had failed even to spend 25 percent of the sub plan that was allocated.
