Rajahmundry: YSR Congress party has scored a surprise win in the election held to Diwan Cheruvu Panchayat after a gap of 22 years. The election was held on Wednesday in East Godavari district. The YSRCP captured the post of Sarpanch. The ruling Telugu Desam Party suffered a jolt. It was able to win only one ward member. YSRCP nominee Kovvada Chander Rao defeated his nearest TDP rival Mallavarapu Satyanand with a margin of 752 votes. There are 8,597 total voters in this major panchayat. As many as 7.114 voters exercised their franchise. The YSRCP won 12 seats, the Congress 3 and the TDP one. Chander Rao, who was elected as sarpanch said he would develop the panchayat as a model panchayat. Opposition to the government’s action in separating Srirampuram and Raghunathpauram from Diwan Cheruvu and subsequent court case led to postponement of election to the panchayat.
