SCR bags 4 awards for conserving energy
The South Central Railway (SCR) apart from making profits in the last quarter and becoming one of the top zones in the Indian Railways has added another achievement. SCR bagged four awards at National Energy Conservation Awards 2014 held at New Delhi on Sunday.
Saves 2.9 lakh units of electricity amounting to Rs 25 lakh during 2013-14
Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) apart from making profits in the last quarter and becoming one of the top zones in the Indian Railways has added another achievement. SCR bagged four awards at National Energy Conservation Awards 2014 held at New Delhi on Sunday.
The Divisional Railway Manager’s Office Building, Hyderabad (Hyderabad Bhavan) bagged the first prize in the buildings category. The Diesel Loco Shed, Vijayawada got the second prize in the Railway Workshops sector, while "Certificate of Merit" was given to Carriage Workshop, Lallaguda in Railway Workshops sector in recognition of its achievements in the area of energy conservation and another prize in the zonal railways sector.
Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of State for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy (Independent Charge), presented the shields to officials of SCR in New Delhi on Sunday. Divisional Railway Manager's Office building, Hyderabad has reduced specific energy consumption (kWh/sq.m.) in 2013-14 by 30 per cent. Zonal Railway has reduced specific energy consumption to an extent of 3.41 per cent during the period of 2013-14. Diesel Loco Shed, Vijayawada reduced specific energy consumption (kWh/Loco) in 2013-14 by 21 per cent (from 4478 to 3536 kWh/Loco) and Carriage Workshop, Lallaguda reduced specific energy consumption (kWh/Coach) in 2013-14 by 6.15 per cent (from 1559 to 1463 kWh/Coach) as compared to previous year.
These efforts resulted in saving of 2.9 lakh units of electricity amounting to Rs 25 lakh for SCR during 2013-14. The reduction has been possible by implementing various energy conservation measures i.e. use of renewable energy sources at stations/service buildings etc., use of star labeled electrical equipments, LED-based lighting, use of energy efficient pumps, automation of pumps, energy efficient/lower wattage fittings in place of higher wattage fittings, timers for water coolers/lighting circuits/high masts etc., energy savers for AC units/machines etc. and occupancy sensors in service buildings etc. SCR has consistently been receiving efficiency awards for energy conservation for the last five years. However, it is for the first time now that SCR has won four awards in one year.
