AP govt cuts 33,000 ration cards just before Sankranti

Visakhapatnam: It seems chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu does a sleight-of -hand while doling out gifts to the poor. One one hand he announced a gift of Rs225 worth essential commodities (six verities) for Makara Sankranti and on the other took away 33,000 ration cards, mostly belonging to the poor. The city has a dubious distinction of having 35 percent living below poverty line.

Sources said the AP Civil Supply Corporation has sent an order to withdraw ration to 33,326 card holders simply for the reason they had failed to submit Aaadhar cards and pictures of their families in the stipulated time.

The order will be implemented from January 2015, the sources added. The city has 3, 75,011 white ration cards which include 392 Annapurna, and 7854 Antyodaya and Annayojana cards. Now the ration would be supplied along with CM’s gift pack to 3,41, 685 card holders.

During Congress regime, 1.5 lakh new ration cards were released to the BPL groups and in the second phase of Rachabanda of Andhra Pradesh, another 65,000 cards were sanctioned. Most of the weeded cards are from this phase. The officials from the civil supplies said in the second phase of ROAP, coupons were issued and the beneficiaries were asked to submit Aadhar card and family photos which they failed to do so. The slum dwellers said they were busy in building their homes and eking out a living and the officials were busy with Hudhud rescue and rehabilitation resulting in shelving of Aadhar enrollment.
