No mention of Telugu states irks Congress leaders

New Delhi: The Modi government has left both the Telugu speaking states disappointed as the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament failed to mention anything about granting special status and financial package to residuary Andhra Pradesh and other incentives promised to the states at the time of passing of the AP State Reorganisation Act.

The President’s speech normally sets out the priorities and direction of the government during the session but there was no mention of Andhra Pradesh in his address on Monday. It may be mentioned here that the joint addresses of Parliament by the President in 2004 had a mention of separate Telangana and 10 years later it became a reality.

Though both the Telugu speaking states were anxiously waiting for some indication about the implementation of the promises made in the AP State Reorganisation Act, including special status category to AP and several other incentives to both the states, the President’s speech came as a shock. Both the states have also pinned high hopes on the Railway budget.

President Pranab Mukherjee is received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival to address the joint session of Parliament on the first day of budget session in New Delhi on Monday.

It remains to be seen what is in store for the two Telugu speaking states. APCC president M Raghuveera Reddy said the people of Andhra Pradesh were expecting with ‘1000 eyes’ that there would be financial incentives to AP but the BJP government had neglected the state in spite of Congress president Sonia Gandhi writing two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue.

Meanwhile, the APCC state unit met n Monday morning at the party headquarters on Akbar Road. Later, former MPs and senior leaders staged a protest against the government in front of the Gandhi statue on the premises of Parliament. During the course of the day, they also met Mallikharjuna Kharge, the Congress’ leader in the Lok Sabha, and prevailed upon him to raise the issue in the Lok Sabha.

They expected at least there would be a package for the backward regions of Rayalaseema and northern coastal districts.Raghuveera Reddy said the party had collected 41 lakh signatures till date and would reach its target of 1 crore signatures of Andhra Pradesh demanding special status to the state. These signatures will be sent to the Prime Minister.
