Hyderabad: The main opposition YSR Congress Party is finding itself on a sticky wicket after it raised the controversy on irrigation projects to mount a tirade against the ruling TDP and to politically corner it. The stand taken by the YSRCP against Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project (PLIP) has turned to be an embarrassment to some within the party.

According to the party insiders, lower rung of party leaders from Anantapur have been expressing their disappointment over the party’s stand before the local MLAs. According to an YSRCP MLA, “the government’s claim of release of water to Anantapur district was not all that fair. In several cases, the water was released to the village tanks identified by the TDP MLA’s.” However, what endeared the government’s move in the lower rung of the YSRCP leaders in the district was that it was for the first time, in the recent past, that they have seen water flowing into the village tanks in a drought-hit area.

Leaders from Chittoor, Kurnool and Kadapa where the YSRCP has sizable political clout, and having more popular than the ruling TDP too have been expressing similar views, the party insiders say. However, neither the MLAs, nor the senior leaders in the party could convey the brewing resentment among the lower rung of the party cadre to the party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, they added. Though the party has put up a brave face, now in hush- hush talks of the party, even some of the senior leaders have been expressing that “the party should have adopted a more softened stand, than going all-out against the government on the issue of PLIP.”
