Hyderabad: Imposing Rs 941-crore additional burden on consumers over and above 200 units of power per month, the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission ( APERC) on Monday gave nod to the Discoms’ proposal to hike power tariff in domestic, commercial and Industries categories. The new tariff comes into effect from April 1.

Announcitng this, APERC chairman G Bhawani Prasad said as against the Discoms’ propsoal to hike tariff by 6 per cent over the existing tariff structure, the commission had agreed for only 5 per cent hike . This would put a burden of 32 paise on each unit on the consumers of over 200 units of power per month. The commission chairman issued the new tariff orders after taking into account the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) filed by the Discoms- APSPDCL (Southern Power Distribution Company Limited) and APEPDCL ( Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited ) on February 5 this year.

The power utilities sought permission to put Rs 1261 crore burden by increasing tariffs for the year 2015-16. The commission has kept unchanged the tariffs for the domestic consumers up to 200 units. About 92 per cent electricity consumers (99 lakh out of 1.55 crore) have been exempted from the tariff burden, he said. In the commercial and domestic categories, the commission did not change the tariff structure for the consumers using up to 100 units per month.

For the consumers in the 200-250 unit category, which consists of about six lakh, there will be no change in power tariff up to first 200 units and the increased tariff would be applicable only from 201 onwards. The utilities projected ARR at Rs 30,308 crore as against projected total revenue from current tariff Rs 22,592 crore. The revenue deficit at the current tariff is Rs 7,716 crore.
