Atmakur: Valuable teak and Narepi logs carried in a boat in River Krishna in Kothapalli mandal were seized by the Forest department staff on Saturday from alleged red sanders smugglers along with red sanders. The staff had found two boats loads of teak. Such fake teak logs are used to mix with red sanders by small-time smugglers.

The seizure in the Atmakur forest division by the patrolling river party comes in the wake of allegations by the department itself that its employees had let off a ship load of teak logs in the Kurnool-Telangana border area. They had recorded confiscation of only one ship, contending that the 16 logs were worth Rs 45,000. Byrutli Forest Ranger Srinath Reddy said later that the seized logs were shifted to local depot.

Meanwhile, a section of the Forest staff claimed that there was collusion between the department and the smugglers by stating that the raid drama was stage-managed. It is learnt that this has been taken to the notice of DFO Selvam.
