Nellore: The series of mild tremors in Nellore and Prakasam districts, in the recent months, is a result of active tectonic activity in the region, say geology experts. Considering the rising fears of locals, the State government has directed the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) to visit the areas and ascertain the reasons for the same.

District Collector M Janaki informed that the team of scientists will visit the areas along with local officials on Thursday. Latest in the line of multiple quakes, NGRI observatory at Addanki recorded a mild quake with an intensity of 1.8 on Richter scale from about 20 kilometres southeast of Pamuru in Prakasam district in the wee hours on Tuesday.

In the last six months, there have been numerous quakes in the region. According to an official from the Geological Survey of India, the presence of volcanic ash at number of places along the river Gundlakamma is indicative of widespread ash getting deposited in the area. The recovery of rich haul of fossils from the basin is indication of a thick forest in the geologic past.

Besides, the area south of Gundlakamma River has a seismic history, according to an official from the Geological Survey of India.
