Hyderabad: The special discussion on the International Women’s Day in the State Assembly on Tuesday witnessed a good measure of plaudits and brickbats between the Opposition and treasury benches. Intervening in the discussion after the leader of the House and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu made a statement on women empowerment, Lead of the Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy took a dig at the ruling party.

Alleging that the State government had failed on all fronts in protecting women, the YSRCP chief listed out several issues where women were at receiving. Listing out episodes of atrocities against women where allegedly ruling party members are involved, Jagan accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of blatantly spreading lies on the International Women’s Day.

Suspension of woman MLA Roja; attack on a MRO Vanajakshi by a ruling party legislator for standing against sand mafia; abusing Anganwadi workers by a ruling party MLA; suicide of a B. Arch girl student Rishiteshwari; unsavoury remarks of Balakrishna; role of ruling party MLAs in ‘Call Money’ scandal; and involvement of a Minister’s son in harassing a woman teacher reflect the failure of government in protecting women folk in the State, he alleged.

The Leader of the Opposition also demanded the Chief Minister not to brazenly protect the ruling party members, who were allegedly involved in harassing women. He also questioned the government’s claim of empowering SHG’s and measures for protection of women , and said that those measures were not at all new as they were already being implemented by the Telangana government.

Taking exception to the remarks, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa, Labour Minister K Achhannaidu criticised the YSRCP chief for misleading the house with his blatant lies. Instead of giving constructive suggestions to empower women, Jagan was trying to derive political mileage, they alleged.

Social Welfare Minister Ravela Kishore Babu claimed acting responsibly and said that he had handed over his son to police on knowing a case had been filed against him in Banjara Hills. Besides, Hindupur MLA N Balakrishna said that his remarks were made in a lighter vein at an audio release function and no one there took objection to it.

“Yet, I had tendered an apology if my remarks hurt anyone,” he clarified. TDP women MLA Anitha came down heavily on Jaganmohan Reddy for taking the side of the suspended MLA Roja, despite knowing well that she had abused her. Following her, M Geetha, Yamini Bala, T Sowmaya, V Kalawathi and few other TDP MLAs have took Jagan to task for leveling charges against the government and asked him to give due place to Y S Sharmila in YSRCP, and showered praises on CM for taking several initiatives for the empowerment of women.
