Amaravati: The State government is introducing Non-Pesticidal Management (NPM) system on a pilot basis in 10 villages in each district of the State from this kharif season to produce quality yield and ensure premium price to farmers. To introduce NPM, the agriculture scientists and officials will conduct meetings in villages and motivate the farmers to introduce this system.

  • It will introduce Non-Pesticidal Management on pilot basis in ten villages in 13 districts of the State
  • Scientists and officials will interact with farmers to create awareness about healthy produce, in-turn healthy food
  • Agriculture scientist Dr.P Naram Naidu says excess use of fertilisers affects land fertility and quality of produce

Though farmers will get reduced yield under this system, but they will get premium price for produce as it will be organic. In Guntur district, the agriculture officials and scientists will conduct awareness meetings in the villages and motivate the farmers to introduce this system. If this system is successful, it would be extended to more mandals.

Some agriculture scientists came from Hyderabad and conducted a feasibility study in the district. Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao instructed the officials to conduct meetings with the farmers and motivate them to introduce this system. Agriculture scientist in Lam Farm Agriculture Research Centre, Guntur, Dr.P Naram Naidu says “Due to excess use of fertilisers land fertility is deteriorating.

Agriculture produce contains pesticide residues. Those who consume the food, would have to face severe health risks or cancer threat. If NPM is introduced, the farmers would have to invest more money but they will get a premium price for yield. Health consciousness is increasing and consumers prefer organic food. Demand for organic food is increasing in the international market.

The importing countries are ready to pay 20 per cent higher price for organic food. Initially, it is difficult for farmers to control insects, they have to take some risk. There is need to save soil health also." Joint director of agriculture VDV Krupadas said, “During this kharif season, we will introduce NPM system in the selected blocks in the villages on pilot basis in the district.

We will conduct awareness meetings in the villages and select the blocks. We will guide the farmers to introduce this system. The farmers will get a quality yield. When one farmer will get premium price for yield, some more farmers will introduce system”.
