Visakhapatnam: The Telugu New Year ‘Durmukhi’ was celebrated on a grand scale officially with pomp, gaiety and devotion here on Friday with HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Collector N Yuvaraj and Joint Collector-II DV Reddy attending the function.
Initially, the guests and the participants were served with ‘Ugadi Pachchadi’ and Andhra special sweets at the venue before participating in the celebrations. The Minister who launched the event complimented the district administration for decorating the venue with a festival atmosphere and wished the people with prosperity in the New Year.

He said he was happy to note the city has secured fifth place in the country in Swachh Bharat Mission, adding that it will secure first place next year which will be a special recognition for the city. About the development activities, he mentioned about the extension of Underground Drainage System to other areas in the city, Underground Cable Network and distribution as well as replacing filament bulbs with LEDs. The Minister announced that working class belong to poor and weaker sections will be given LIG house sites on ‘draw of lots’ system at a layout in Dakamarri area to be laid out by the VUDA shortly in an extent of 90 acres.
Stating that the Chief Minister and Union Ministers will be coming to the city on April 11 to inaugurate the VIMS and to lay a foundation stone for the ESI hospital, he sought public cooperation in all developmental works.
Anakapalli MP Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao and Collector N Yuvaraj appealed to the parents to encourage their children to learn Telugu language, Telugu tradition and culture. Later, the Minister launched an e-mail ID- ‘e-connection with teachers’ with which the functioning of 1.3 lakh teachers in the State and their academic plans could easily be assessed.
Earlier, Sahasravadhani Dr Garikapati Narasimha Rao delivered pravachanams. The Minister felicitated 29 village sarpanches by presenting Ugadi Puraskarams in recognition of their work and also artistes who excelled in stage performance, folk, dance, Harikatha, Burrakatha, nadaswaram and mridangam artistes.
