Giddalur/Markapuram: Minister Narayana who was on tour in Prakasam district on Thursday said that the water distribution through tankers should be in a transparent way and reach the needy, but not fill pockets of seamsters. He said that his department found several incidents of officials and suppliers making money on water distribution and quoted that nearly Rs 4 crore was misused in Chittoor Municipality in the name of distribution of water through tankers.

The Minister also promised to supply water daily once in 110 urban local bodies in the state from May 1. The Minister visited Giddalur Nagara Panchayat and Markapuram municipalities in the Prakasam district. The local women complained to the Minister that they were not getting more than 100 liters of water daily for a family.

The Minister promised them to supply more water but asked to save rain water and follow water conservation techniques. In Giddalur, the Minister participated in ‘Save Water, Safe Life’ rally and attended the foundation programme of the rainwater harvesting pit in a police station.

He said, “Due to drought conditions, the Guntur, Prakasam, and Krishna districts do not have sufficient groundwater and unable to supply drinking water regularly. Out of the 33 municipalities in the state, we are giving water once in two or three days in 22 municipalities. Though efforts are being made to supply them drinking water daily, it is very important now to construct one recharge pit in every house to save every drop of rain we are going to receive in future.

In Giddalur, the water supplying frequency is going to be increased to 400 trips from 100 trips daily. To put a check to the water scarcity permanently, a 107-km water supply pipeline will be commissioned at Dupadu project and will try to complete the project in 60 days.” Speaking at Markapuram, the Minister asked the pubic to be vigilant enough to see no water tanker was misused.

He said, “We are planning to supply drinking water on the daily basis from May 1 in all urban local bodies. Wherever the ULB unable to supply through pipelines, we would send the water through tankers and provide necessary funds. In Markapuram, only 200 trips of tankers are being supplied up to now. But we are increasing it to 500 trips daily.

It is the responsibility of public to see the funds are utilised for the purpose and no scam like the one in Chittoor, for Rs four crore, is happened again.” The Municipal Minister also emphasised the need for changes in the education system in municipal schools. He said, “There are not much of expected results from the municipal schools and they are not enough in the competitive world outside.

We are trying to increase the standards of municipal schools on par with the corporate schools and are offering foundation courses for the children in them to enable the kids to compete for IIT, medicine, and other professional courses. As English has become mandatory, we are also encouraging English medium in government schools.”
