Nellore: District in-charge Minister Sidda Raghava Rao directed the officials to speed up construction of 400 to 500 check dams in the district at the earliest besides putting efforts for fast completion of soak pits and farm ponds. Sidda reviewed implementation of various programmes with district officials at the Collectorate here on Wednesday. The Minister said that the State government is striving hard to augment water resources for people and plans afoot to make the State drought-free.

The Minister also stressed on the need for resolving drinking water woes of people living in rural areas in the next two months. He directed the officials to set up water kiosks in all important towns to avoid dehydration cases. He also asked the irrigation authorities to desilt tanks in the district by the first week of June enabling them to store more water during rainy season.

DWMA Project Director P Haritha said that they had proposed 30,000 farm ponds to be completed under NREGS. She said 17,323 have been sanctioned so far in which 49 were completed and works are under progress in 1,476 farm ponds. She said more than 50,000 workers were getting employment on daily basis and 71,000 soak pits would be completed by May 10. The RWS officials informed the Minister that there was no water scarcity in the district due to heavy rains in the November last and drinking water was being supplied through tankers only for 10 habitations.

Superintending Engineer said that there was no water problem even in upland mandals of the district. MLC V Narayana Reddy suggested to officials to set up water and buttermilk distribution centres on the national highway for commuters. Nellore Municipal Commissioner Venkateswarlu said they were supplying drinking water twice in a day in the city. Also, distribution of water with 22 hired tractors for recently merged villages, he said.

Joint Collector A Md Imtiyaz, Additional Joint Collector R Salmon Rajkumar, DCC President Dhananjaya Reddy, former Minister P Ratnam and others were present. Later, the Minister inaugurated buttermilk distributions centres at the Collectorate and Chinna Bazaar.
