Visakhapatnam: Rana Uppalapati, a 34-year-old, took off from Vizag Beach on his roller skates to Chennai on Saturday.

This is part of second edition of Vizag Going Pink, the organisers said. Rana will cover 800 kilometres and reach Chennai on June 4, covering a distance of 100 km per day. According to his wife Sirisha, Rana reached Tuni braving the pre-monsoon showers and resting at Tuni, which is about 100 km from here.

Skating is for a cause to raise funds for underprivileged cancer patients for every kilometre skated. The funds will go to the treatment of under privileged patients who cannot afford the diagnosis or treatment. Sirisha said talking about the aim of the mission.

On his way, Rana will have discussions with school and college students to create awareness on fitness, cancer and environment. “I love skating, travelling and using this adventure for a good cause. I started skating at the age of eight and it was a sport for me for a very long period till I realised it can be used for a cause,’’ Rana said.

His first adventure from Mumbai to Goa covering a distance of 600 km in the month of April was successful. What was meant to be a pleasure trip laced with excitement, it turned out be serious with his thoughts inspiring the youth on the way.

“I talked to hundreds of people and discussed a wide range of subjects related to issues of women, cancer, open-defecation, pollution, untouchability, alcoholism, gender equality and others. These were not part of the plan, but happened spontaneously,’’ Rana said.

“He loves skating so much that even during his business trips, Rana skates to keep his mind fresh and well composed,’’ says Sirisha
