Anantapur: The department of animal husbandry has embarked upon project ‘Ksheera Sagar' aimed at nutritionally strengthening the pregnant cows and buffaloes by providing them pre-natal and post-natal care to the mother and calf through a supply of concentrated feed. The project will address all the health concerns of pregnant cows and buffaloes and will prevent a death of calves due to malnutrition of mother during pregnancy period apart from providing post- natal care.

De-worming is also part of the health initiative and concentrated feed will be supplied to the identified pregnant cows and buffaloes. The department will be spending Rs 9,000 on a single unit which comprises two animals for every farmer under PROJECT KSHEERA SAGAR.

The kit includes nutritional feed, health care medicines and insurance coverage. Rs 75 subsidy is being provided to the single unit and the beneficiary have to pay approximately Rs 2,000. Animal husbandry department joint director-in-charge K J Kumar told The Hans India that the scheme is a boon to the farmers who are rearing cattle.

The scheme would nutritionally strengthen the mother and the calf and ensure safe delivery of the calf as well as the mother's health. Another scheme dubbed as ‘Fodder Silage Bales' was launched in April under which a package of green grass weighing 150 to 400-kilogramme package will also be supplied to cattle farmers as part of measures to combat fodder scarcity during the summer.

Every buffalo or cow needs 15 kgs a day for consumption. The green grass packed in an airproof package will remain evergreen due to the feature of the controlled environment in its packing. Also, paddy straw too should be integrated as part of its everyday menu. The cattle, which consumed the government supplied nutritious fodder, would give two litres of milk extra every day, thus boosting the income of the farmers owning one or more cows or buffaloes.

The green grass package will be supplied just for Rs 2 a kg while the actual price of the fodder in the open market is Rs 6.80 a kg. The paddy straw will be sold at Rs 3.50 a kg. The highly nutritional feed will boost animal health as well as its milk giving capacity. About 25,000 tonnes of Fodder Silage Bales and 5,000 tonnes of paddy straw have been kept ready for distribution by the end of this month.

The government initiative will indirectly boost the milk production in the district as well as the general health conditions of milch animals. The milk procurement in the district is to the order of two lakh litres per day. The district had graduated from 25,000 litres per day over the years to two lakh litres per day, thanks to the efforts put in by the district administration and the department of animal husbandry.
