Visakhapatnam: In order to make the city a safe destination for the tourists, the State government is proposing to have tourist police to protect the visitors, both domestic and foreign, and guide them to visit place of interest in addition to giving them security. If grounded, this tourist police station would be the first in the State and second in the country after Kerala.

The international tourist police station was opened in Kochi in 2010 and the response has been huge. In a recent meeting with senior bureaucrats, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed the idea of having tourist police in the State, particularly in the famous tourist places, where the footfall would be more.

The new commissioner of police, T Yoganand, suggested to the government that Vizag city should have the first station as a pilot project since the geographically the city is widespread and the regular police engrossed in regular work. The government said to have tentatively accepted the proposal and is proceeding towards realising it.

“The idea is to make the city a tourist-friendly and instill confidence among the foreign and domestic tourists that it is safe for all categories of people,’’ said a senior officer of the police department here on Friday. He said the tourist police will act as guides and direct the tourists as to how to reach their destinations and the precautions to be taken there.

They will also ensure the tourists were not cheated by touts and brokers. In case of thefts, the tourist police would direct them how and where to lodge a complaint. The tourist police station, in association with Tourism Department, would have the brochures on important tourist destinations to guide the visitors.

“The tourist police will not have power to register cases but prepare a report on cases,’’ said the officer. These police will also help the foreign tourists on renewal of visas if expired and help the visitors in case of loss of passports and other valuables. In Pattaya in Thailand, tourist police are more visible than the regular police. They are seen mostly on the beach road moving in battery operated cars.
