Visakhapatnam: Special chief secretary for youth advancement, culture and sports LV Subrahmanyam asked the officials and representatives of various sports and games associations to come out with the master plan for a comprehensive development of sports and games in the city.

Addressing a meeting here on Tuesday, the special chief secretary told the officials that the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was keen to make the city an international hub for sports and games.

He said the State government was planning to host national games in the State in 2018 and some of the major events would be held in the city. “The city will also host the national athletics championship this winter,” he said.

The athletics championship would be held at Kommadi, where a synthetic track was being developed at the integrated sports complex. The complex would also have hostel facilities for 500 athletes. National Athletics Day would be observed on August 29 and on that day swimming academy would be inaugurated to train the youth.

Subrahmanyam asked the district sports development officer John Geliat Rodrigues to make arrangements for swimming coaching at GVMC Aqua Complex located on the beach road.

He also asked him to identify potential swimmers from Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts.Regarding other sports, the special chief secretary asked the officials to train tribal youth in archery, kabaddi and kho kho.

Initial training for archery would be given at Paderu and later the talented youth would be shifted to sports complex at Kommadi where experts would be deployed for specialised training.

Explaining the sports facilities in the district, collector Dr N Yuvaraj said 10 grounds have been identified in different mandals, which were being developed at a cost of Rs 14 lakh each.

Vice chairman of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority T Baburao Naidu spoke about the integrated sports complex coming up at Gandigundam.
