Speaking on the occasion, Radhakrishna said that the commission will note down all the problems narrated by the farmers and submit its report to the government on the steps to be taken up for the development of agriculture sector.

​Eluru: Prof R Radhakrishna, chairman, State Agriculture Commission, said that the commission would suggest the government about the sustainable development of agriculture by submitting its reports on the farmers’ problems in the State.

He presided over the public hearing held at Collector’s conference hall here on Tuesday on agricultural development. On this occasion, the chairman and members interacted with the farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, Radhakrishna said that the commission will note down all the problems narrated by the farmers and submit its report to the government on the steps to be taken up for the development of agriculture sector.

West Godavari District Collector K Bhaskar said that about 80 per cent are tenant farmers in the district and as there is no legal leased agreement between landowner and the tenant farmer, the latter did not get the legal rights.

He said that the landowners got the crop loans in advance from the banks, and, as a result, the tenant farmers have not received the loans.

He pointed out that the crop insurance, input subsidy and other facilities are being extended to landowners directly. He opined that the bankers should check who are cultivating the lands and which crop they are cultivating and other related issues while sanctioning the loans.

MH Sheriff, Additional Joint Collector, said that agriculture and allied sectors are treated as priority sectors and the officials were trying to concentrate on the development of those sectors.

He said a plan was being drafted to cultivate three crops in a year in the district. He revealed that the usage of fertilisers and pesticides was reduced in the district with the availability of soil-testing facility.

Anjaneyaraju, a farmer from Kaikaram village in Unguturu said that the agriculture sector was in crisis at present. He said that there was a scarcity of agriculture labourers due to migrations.

Tobacco Board former member Gadde Seshagiri Rao suggested bringing of the pulses under crop insurance scheme. He also suggested creating awareness among tobacco farmers in upland areas to take up cultivation of pulses. Most of the farmers suggested enhancement of the Minimum Support Price for the crops.

Melam Durgaram of Vissakoderu village in Palakoderu mandal said that the government has to provide facilities to the tenant farmers without losing the landowners’ rights according to the Act. He suggested purchasing the crop at the field itself as is done in Punjab and Haryana.

Commission Convenor Prof K Venkata Reddy, Members D Narasimha Reddy, S Galab, SKVS Raju, PP Reddy, KS Reddy, Dr Satyanarayana, B Mishra, West Godavari Joint Director of Agriculture Y Sai Lakshmeswari, Horticulture Assistant Directors Durgesh, Vijayalakshmi, Animal Husbandry Joint Director Gnaneswara Rao, District Rural Development Agency Project Director P Srinivasa Rao also participated in the meeting.
