Hyderabad: In a development which indicates robust growth in the tourism sector across two Telugu states, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have registered over 30 per cent upswing in domestic tourist arrivals during 2015 as compared with the year earlier.

While Telangana recorded second highest growth of 30.5 per cent in the domestic tourist arrivals, Andhra Pradesh stood third with 30.3 per cent upswing in 2015, a study by industry body Assocham has revealed.

West Bengal topped the list with a year-on-year growth of over 43 per cent whereas Madhya Pradesh (22.6 per cent) and Gujarat (17.4 per cent) made up the last two of the top five states with the highest growth numbers.

The study titled 'Domestic Tourism: Tap the Treasure' pegged the total domestic tourists in India at 143 crore during 2015. Andhra Pradesh accounted for 8.5 per cent of the total while Telangana’s market share stood at 6.6 per cent.
Tamil Nadu led the top 10 states list with 23 per cent market share followed by Uttar Pradesh (14 per cent).

"Given the growth of India's economy, expansion of the middle-classes and ongoing westernisation of their lifestyles, the relative importance of domestic tourism can only be expected to increase exponentially over the coming decades," D S Rawat, Secretary-General, Assocham, said in a statement.

The study estimated that the number of domestic tourists in India would zoom to 227 crore by 2020 from 143 crore in 2015. Meanwhile, Maharashtra emerged at the top in terms of attracting investments in the country's hospitality and tourism industry. It received Rs 15,500 crore out of over Rs 93,400 crore attracted by the sector in India till June 2016.
