Kakinada: The lands acquired for Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) for industrial purpose to the tune of 10.446 acres in both U-Kothapalli and Tondangi mandals were allotted 505 acres of land for establishing a pharma unit at Kona area under Danavai Peta panchayat in Tondangi mandal of East Godavari district.

Out of total 10,446 acres, 8,200 acres were acquired in U-Kothapalli mandal and the rest 2,264 acres of d-patta lands were acquired in Tondangi mandal. It is said that the allotment at Kona area lands for a pharma unit brought resentment among the farming community who are small, marginal farmers and from weaker sections. They feel that their livelihood would be affected if they part with the lands.

KSEZ Vyatireka Porata Committee convener Chinta Suryanarayana Murthy revealed that the lands under acquisition are still under control by farmers for several years. Even after an acquisition the farmers are utilising the same for various agricultural purposes and are not interested to part with their lands.

However local MLA and YSRCP leader Dadisetty Raja has a different story to explain. He said that if the government is very keen to acquire these 505 d-patta lands, they should pay Rs 25 lakh per acre towards compensation. He reminded that the farmers on the other side of Tandava River refused to part with their lands for Rs 25 lakh.

The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) authorities should opt for alternative sites or should arrange to pay Rs 25 lakh per acre as compensation to farmers and convince them as the market price is Rs 50 lakh per acre,
he said.

The MLA alleged that police are harassing the locals who refuse to part with their lands in one way or other. This type of harassment should be stopped immediately and the lands should be taken with consent of farmers only.

He said that there are 260 shrimp hatcheries around this allotted site and the water sources in the vicinity would get polluted if this activity of pharma production begins.

In addition to this these hatcheries they have been providing employment to more than 10,000 rural folk in the area whereas the pharma unit is expected to provide employment only about 600 rural folk, Raja said.

All India Shrimp Hatcheries president L Satyanarayana revealed that pollution is likely to affect the neighbouring areas and would also affect the Rs 30,000-crore foreign exchange earning shrimp exports badly.

We had spoken about the issue to the State government but no assurance over shifting the pharma unit was given. Hence we decided to approach National Green Mission Corporation for solving the grievance, the national president revealed.
