Kakinada: Medical and health authorities of East Godavari have taken up special measures to check malaria and other diseases among tribal population in Chintur revenue division.

The division consists of V R Puram, Yetapaka, Kunavaram and Chintur mandal in East Godavari known as Polavaram-submerging mandals. The four mandals together have eight Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and two Community Health Centres (CHCs) to cater to the needs of local population.

There are total eight teams which under the supervision of additional DMHO, Dr M, Pavan Kumar, Dr Rama Rao and Dr Sivarama Krishna. It may be recalled here that total 32 people including three women were admitted in Kakinada Government General Hospital (KGGH) between September 8 and 11.

The KGGH authorities noticed that several patients have been suffering from kidney ailments. Of these 32 people, one Karam Rama Rao (45) of Chinamettapalli died on Tuesday. Nearly 15 patients were discharged on September 21 after getting a medical aid of Rs 1,500.

It is suspected by the medical authorities that malnutrition, food habits, iron deficiency and consumption of country-made liquor has been the main reason for the rise in number of kidney ailment cases. The medical teams apart from conducting door to door campaigns distributed deworming tablets as many people have been suffering from this worm problem.

When enquired East Godavari DMHO Dr K Chandrayya said on Thursday that they initiated measures for supplying nutritious food items containing iron and other elements as it was noticed that hemoglobin content as very low in several people.

On the issue of consuming country-made liquor, the issue was brought to the notice of district administration and the excuse department officials concerned in Chintur division. “Our medical investigations revealed that the consumption of country-made liquor is one of the main reasons for kidney ailments,” the DMHO clarified.
