Visakhapatnam: The National programme on rabies prevention and control is to be unveiled soon all over India, said Dr Kapil Maithal, vice-president and head of R&D, Indian Immunologicals (A subsidiary of Government of India National Dairy Development Corporation) at GITAM Medical College here on Wednesday.

Participating as a chief guest at the seminar on “Developing Strategic Plan for Rabies Elimination in a Smart City” organized by GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences & Research as part of world Rabies Day, he saidcheaper treatment based on monoclonal antibodies will be made available to all patients bitten by a suspected rabid dog.

He stressed the need of bringing together the medical specialists, Veterinary doctors, civic officials, immunologists and animal activists under one roof and brings out an agreeable and acceptable framework to eliminate rabies from Visakhapatnam.

GITAM University Vice-Chancellor Prof. MS Prasada Rao, presided over the function and said that concerted efforts are necessary to bring in inter-sectoral cooperation and public support in elimination of rabies from the city.
