Kadapa: The aim of the government for providing water to the agriculture and drinking purpose to the Kadapa district through the Sujala Somasila Scheme (SSS) was not fulfilled. Even though, Rs 50 crore of public money spent on that purpose get wasted.

In view of promoting agriculture operations and providing drinking water to the people of drought-hit Kadapa district, the state government had decided to construct the SSS with an initial estimate of Rs 1,970 crore.

Under this scheme the government proposed to divert the backwaters of Somasila reservoir located near Kotapadu in Vontimitta mandal in 2008. Providing water to the industries, education, research centres etc are also among the major needs of SSS.

Works were executed under package-1 from Somasila reservoir to Kanumalomapalle village of Siddavatam mandal in September 2008. About Rs 15.5 crore were spent in the first phase and remaining Rs 34.5 crore in second phase. However, works came to a standstill due to various reasons.

With Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during recent much-hyped presentation held for his party MLAs over Polavaram project did not mention about the SSS but assured to provide storage facility to 100 tmcft of water in the irrigation projects in Kadapa district if Polavaram is completed.

“It is unfortunate that the Congress and now TDP governments failed to provide water to the irrigation and drinking purpose despite Somasila backwaters available in abundance.

The government should think over completion of pending SSS instead designing new projects in Kadapa district opined J Radhakrishna Reddy of Kanumalomapalli village of Siddavatam mandal.
Rythu Sangam district secretary B Dastagiri Reddy told The Hans India that there are possibilities to revive SSS but it has been thrown in to the dust bin due to political reasons.
