Tirupati: The scorching sun and unabated dry spell failed to deter the lotus flowers bloom full in the pool in the sprawling Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) campus, surprising onlookers. Three varieties of lotus flowers-pink, white and violet-are found in the pool. The pink and white colour lotus flower commonly found in pilgrim city area but violet is rare. The lotus flower is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists and it was extensively mentioned in the Puranas.

An enthusiastic botanist from the university, some time back brought the violet lotus to the SVU from Himalayas when he was on a study tour. The lotus revitalised and spread all over the small pool and never failed to bloom full in the summer, the ideal time for the plant to blossom. The pool was formed after the university dug the area for construction of a swimming pool which is still to materialise. It is located near women’s hostel in the campus.
