Chittoor: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is said to be very much particular to introduce cashless transactions in fair price shops and the payment for purchase of essential commodities to be made through internet banking. But in his native turf, Chittoor district, it has proved to be a futile exercise. Most of the white ration card holders have failed to open saving banks account due to sheer reluctance of banking institutions and the concerned authorities.

The authorities have come to understand that 80 per cent of white ration card holders in the district have yet to open their bank accounts. As many 10.33 lakhs white ration card holders of BPL category are subjected to get their quota of essential commodities like rice, kerosene , palmolein oil and others through 2873 fair price shops every month in the district . There are clear cut instructions to all the ration card holders to open bank accounts with a linkage to Aadhaar number also.

Out of 10.33 lakh white ration cards holders only 2.23 lakh card holders have opened their accounts so far in the district. More than 3.2 lakh white ration card holders are said to be illiterates in the district who are least worried to get bank accounts. Over 2.81 lakh ration card holders are unaware about opening the accounts in the rural areas. Hence enforcing the cashless transactions system in PDS has proved to be a futile exercise in Chief Minister’s naïve district.

The FP shop dealers have expressed their inability blatantly that they could not follow the rules and regulations of the Government in achieving cashless transactions. Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday , Chamundeswari , District Supply Officer admitted the gross failure of the department to enforce cashless transactions system in fair price shops due to various reasons.
