Hyderabad: The Secretary level talks between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments hasled to a temporary understanding on sharing of Krishna water between the two states.

As a first step, Andhra Pradesh government agreed to release 2 TMCft of water to meet drinking waters needs of Hyderabad which has been reeling under severe water crisis since this summer. On Saturday it started release of water.

Telangana Special Chief Secretary ( Irrigation) SK Joshi and his AP counterpart Shashi Bhushan Kumar held talks on the issue on Friday. The meeting assumed significance in the wake of Andhra Pradesh government skipping the meeting which was conducted by Krishna River Management Board ( KRMB) last week.

Top officials said the AP government responded positively to the Telangana demand for the immediate release of 2 TMCft of water to Hyderabad. The AP government also expressed its readiness to resolve the long pending water disputes.

The TS government has been fighting with the Centre on its share in the Godavari waters as AP had diverted Godavari water from Polavaram to river Krishna. The Telangana state is entitled to utilize 43 TMCft of water in accordance with Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award (GWDT), 1980.
