Students strongly objected by saying that it will be an additional burden for them. On the other hand, hostels lack many facilities, they said. The hostel inmates argued to increase the establishment charges after providing the required facilities.
On this occasion, they also alleged that the food quality provided at the hostel was so poor.
The rice used in the hostel was of very cheap variety. They also pointed out that the hostels were overcrowded and several fans were also not working. In the afternoon, Vice-Chancellor Prof V Durga Bhavani called all the hostlers and staff working in the hotels for a meeting at the University auditorium and discussed the problems and limitations with them. Speaking to the media, V-C said that they were running the hostel on cooperative basis.
As there was no separate funds for the hostels, the amount generated from the self-finance courses was also spent on the maintenance of hostels. In 2016, we have spent Rs 1 crore for repairs in the hostels, the V-C said. The varsity has to pay municipal tax of Rs 50 lakh for six months, she added. Durga Bhavani also said that there were mentors for inmates. Any problems can be brought to their notice or send an email to the V-C.
They can even drop the complaints in the box. She made it clear that all the problems were explained to the students. Still, if any one feels the increase in establishment charges as additional burden, they can give it in writing so that they will be exempted. The remaining issues were only petty things and they also will be addressed.
The V-C also said that she will pay personal attention over hostels here after by visiting them very often. To build an additional hostel block, Rs 33 crore were sanctioned by the government but they will be released in the second phase. Meanwhile, the varsity officials are trying to seek the help of philanthropists for running hostels, she maintained.
