Tirupati: Tirupati Urban police seized 15 tonne red sanders logs near Chennai worth Rs 5 crore on Thursday morning. According to Urban SP Abhishek Mohanty, police had arrested a red sanders smuggler B Sreenivasulu and nine others from Nellore district and Tamil Nadu on November 14 at Amudur forest in Yerpedu mandal and seized 21 logs and one Bolero Maxi truck.

On Thursday morning, another smuggler Abudl Razak was arrested at Chennai by the police. on the information provided by him, Yerpedu SI and special team of Urban police raided a red sanders godown run by one smuggler Beeda Rafi near industrial area, Chennai and seized 595 red sanders root logs, 57 bags of red sanders powder weighing around 15 tonnes.

Search is on for some smugglers from Tamil Nadu in connection with the seizure in Yerpedu, the SP said. “During the investigation, we got information on red sanders smuggling from Chennai to Malaysia and Hong Kong and we continue our investigation in the angle too. We are going to nab two more smugglers from TN soon,” Mohanty said.

Meanwhile, minister for industries N Amaranatha Reddy visited red sanders task force office on Thursday. Task force IG Kantha Rao, SP Ravi Sankar and other task force personnel received the minister with a warm welcome. Amaranatha Reddy interacted to the forest and police officials on measures being taken to prevent red sanders smuggling.

Later, speaking to media, the minister said red sanders trees are a wealth of Rayalaseema region and protection of red sanders forest is not only the duty of task force or forest officials but also of every citizen of Rayalaseema.
